Insider Tips for a Day in Cologne

For many, the Cologne Carnival is a main reason for a city trip to Cologne, but what many don't know is the hidden gems that lie within the catherdral city. Lisa, Front Office Supervisor at the Adina Hotel Cologne, has been a Cologne resident for over five years, here she reveals her favourite spots for an unforgettable day in the beautiful cathedral city.

    High Above Cologne's Rooftops

After a quiet start to the day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel buffet, head from the Adina Hotel Cologne to the Rheinpark. This is not only great for a short walk; the Cologne cable car is also located on the edge of the park. This is probably the best way to cross the Rhine: In the air, with the best view over the city.

Into the Nature - Take a Deep Breath at Flora

Once you reach the other side of the Rhine, you are already at the city's next highlight: the Flora. In the centre of the city, there is a botanical garden to discover that invites you to let your mind wander and relax. If you like, you can enjoy your second coffee of the day and a slice of cake from the Flora café before making your way into the city centre.

    Next Stop: The Golden Twenties

Even though it is a short walk, Lisa recommends walking to the city centre, as it runs directly along the banks of the Rhine. For those who prefer the more comfortable side of life, there is also the option of travelling by public transport. In the heart of the city centre, come across Cologne's landmark: Cologne Cathedral where you can capture a selfie on the steps of the Domplatte. From the cathedral, it's just a stone's throw to Heumarkt, where a special attraction is waiting to be discovered - TimeRide Cologne. TimeRide invites us on a journey into the ‘Cöln’ of the past, where you can follow the story of a young woman with the help of VR technology.

60 Seconds Between Napoli and the Rhine Promenade

By now it's evening and it's time to settle down in one of the many restaurants in the neighbourhood. Lisa's personal recommendation is to stay right here at Heumarkt and go to ‘60 seconds to napoli’. This place serves by far the best pizza in Cologne and you definitely shouldn't miss it. For those who keen to try something different, there are many culinary alternatives on Heumarkt and in the surrounding area. A little tip: 150 metres down the Rhine promenade you will find more restaurants with wonderful views of the Rhine.

„Drinks de ejne met?“ (‘Cologne’ for: ‘Will you have a drink with me?’)

Well-fed, maken your way back to the ‘Schäl Sick’ (‘Cologne’ for: right bank of the Rhine). On foot, cross the Hohenzollern Bridge, also known as the Bridge of love locks, or by S-Bahn. Once on the other side, find yourself directly at the Köln Messe/Deutz railway station, before your last stop on your Cologne day trip - the Deutzer Brauhaus. This brewery is one of the most famous breweries in Cologne and is conveniently located less than five minutes from the Adina Hotel Cologne, making it the perfect spot to end the day with one (or more) ‘Kölsch‘ Beer.

    My Cologne Address

After a day trip through Cologne, rest your head at the Adina Hotel Cologne that not only offers stylish apartments with fully equipped kitchens and plenty of living space, but also the comfort of a hotel - including a pool, sauna and gym. Thanks to its central location at the exhibition centre and its proximity to the Rhine, you can be in the old town, at the cathedral or in the city's trendiest districts in just a few minutes - and still feel at home at Adina.
