Summer in the City: The Most Beautiful Bathing Lakes in Germany

    Image: Franziska & Tom Werner

GERMANY: On hot summer days, city travellers often long for a refreshing break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Fortunately, there's many lakes near our Adina Hotels ideal for swimming and cooling off. From the picturesque lakes near Munich, Berlin and Hamburg to the charming waters near Leipzig and Nuremberg, there are plenty of opportunities for relaxation and adventure...

Hamburg: A Beach Feeling at Boberger See

Just a fifteen-minute drive from Hamburg city centre, the Boberger See feels like a coastal beach. The picturesque quarry pond, once an extraction pit for sand and gravel, reaches impressive depths of up to 18 metres. Nestled in an idyllic nature reserve, the lake is the perfect destination for nature lovers. The Boberg dunes, a unique landscape feature in Hamburg, are located directly adjacent to the lake. Part of these dunes is even used as a glider airfield! Whether you're looking for a day of swimming or hiking through the dune landscape - Boberger See offers the perfect change of pace on a hot summer day.

    Leipzig: Lake Kulkwitz - A Diver's Paradise

Lake Kulkwitz, or "Kulki" as the people of Leipzig call it, is one of the most beautiful lakes in Saxony thanks to its clear water. The flooded open-cast mine is not only a paradise for swimming enthusiasts, but also one of the best diving areas in central Germany. Divers can explore a fascinating underwater park with a "sunken" ship and aircraft wreck, while on the surface, wakeboarders make the most of the perfect conditions. There is also a floating lido, boat hire and even a high ropes course for the adventurous.

Berlin: The Famous Wannsee and the Secret Straussee

The famous Wannsee is a must-visit during a Berlin summer. For many localss, this lake is and remains their absolute favourite lake, as its vast expanse and 1.2 km long sandy beach, including beach chairs, give it a seaside feel. The lido is easy to reach and the lake grounds also offers a volleyball and football pitch, a kiosk with snacks, a playground and pedal boat hire for fun on the water.

If you prefer something a little quieter, take the S-Bahn to Straußberg, on the outskirts of Berlin. Here, the clear and turquoise shimmering Straussee meanders through the forest and offers numerous private bathing spots around the lake with plenty of nature.

Munich: Swimming with Alpine Views at Wörthsee and Ammersee

The lake district in Bavaria with its crystal-clear waters is a true paradise for those seeking relaxation. Lake Wörthsee, just a short drive from Munich, will delight you with its tranquil and idyllic surroundings. Sunbathing lawns and cosy bathing spots offer the perfect conditions for a relaxing day by the water, while water sports enthusiasts can let off steam with a sailing or stand-up paddling experience.

We also recommend the nearby Ammersee, the third largest lake in Bavaria. With its wide beaches and charming lakeside promenades, the Ammersee is a paradise for swimmers and sun worshippers. Sailors and windsurfers find ideal conditions here, and excursion boats also invite you to take a leisurely cruise with a view of the Alps. The dreamy towns on the lakeshore, such as Herrsching and Dießen, are home to many cafés and restaurants with wonderful views of the lake too.

Nuremberg: Natural Idyll on the Großer Brombachsee

The Großer Brombachsee, just a short drive from Nuremberg, is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. As the centrepiece of the Franconian Lake District, the lake is home to many activities, like sailing, surfing and relaxing boat tours. Its extensive sandy beaches and spacious sunbathing lawns are ideal for swimming, sunbathing and picnicking too. The 2000 metre long dam wall is particularly impressive, offering spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding landscape. Whether you're there for sporting activities or simply relaxing in nature - the Großer Brombachsee is a perfect excursion for young and old.
