Free Things to do in Melbourne

GERMANY: With the school holidays here, now is the time to start thinking of ways to keep the kids entertained when visiting Melbourne. Don’t worry, we’re here to help! We’ve put together a list of free family friendly activities in Melbourne that won’t break the bank.

Be amazed at the Melbourne Zoo

You’ll be surprised to know that Melbourne Zoo offers free admission for kids on weekends and during the school holidays. Located a short 15-minute drive from Melbourne CBD, this is the perfect place to take the kids of a family day out. Get excited to see the lions, gorillas and meet a baby elephant named Mali.

Learn at the State Library of Victoria

Wander around each magnificent room and prepare to be amazed by the incredible architecture of this 100 year old building. The library has plenty of activities during the school holidays that will keep your kids engaged.

Wander around the Queen Victoria Market

Follow in the first little piggy’s footsteps and go to market. There are lots to choose from but our pick is the Queen Victoria Market, both for its excellent range of vendors and the number of free samples on offer.

    Picnic at Royal Botanic Gardens

If you’re looking to some fresh air (for both the kids and yourself) you can’t go past a visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Entry is free and there are lots of great walking tracks, so pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the sunshine.

    Ride the City Circle Tram

For a fantastic way to explore the city, jump on the City Circle Tram. This tourist tram is free and has multiple hop on locations. As it is a circle track, you can ride round and round for as long as you like.

    Explore Laneways for Street Art

Nothing says Melbourne more than secret laneways splashed with vibrant colours. Start your exploration at Hosier Lane and follow the maze of laneways heading north. The kids will have a great time discovering and pointing out the creative artwork.

Have a swim at Brighton Beach

If the weather is looking good, get your family down to Brighton Beach. Go for a swim, walk along the beach, and take a family selfie in front of the famous brightly painted bathing boxes.

Visit the St Kilda Twilight Market

Every Thursday during summer, the St Kilda Twilight Market brings together beautiful crafts, fashion and food. Wander around the stalls, then take a seat on the grass and breathe in the buzzing atmosphere and enjoy the free live music.

End the day at St Kilda Pier

To experience a beautiful sunset after an incredible day of exploration, get down to St Kilda Pier. If you’re lucky enough, you may spot a penguin or two cuddling up for a good night’s sleep.
