A New York State of Mind
Let’s face it: international travel is parked on the tarmac for a while. But for those missing the Big Apple, there is a way to create a New York-style staycation in beautiful Brisbane.
Let’s start by channelling a little Audrey. Grab a croissant and coffee and press your nose up against the glass to drool over the diamonds on display at Tiffany & Co in the Queen Street Mall.
After your Breakfast at Tiffany’s moment, it’s off to Brisbane’s Cultural Centre – to discover the priceless masterpieces on loan from NY’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (fondly known as “the Met”) and now on show at Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art.
The line-up reads like a who’s who from the history of art: works by Rembrandt, Renoir, Turner, Monet, Carravaggio – to name a few – are here in Brissy to dazzle the culturally inclined and artistically appreciative until November.
Next – the big lights of Broadway… or, at least, Queensland’s cultural equivalent in the form of QPAC… The city’s latest, sought-after golden ticket is to the production of Roald Dahl’s, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The much-loved story comes to the stage in September – and features a cast of young local actors sharing the eponymous role.
Time to find the stay in your New York-style StayCation.
The city's historic Adina Apartment Hotel Brisbane had a former life as the Queensland Government Savings Bank… and embraces the building’s original art deco features. Choose from roomy studios through to three-bedroom apartments. There’s an accommodation option that’s great for singles, couples or families.
Adina Brisbane, on George Street in the CBD, is currently offering a three night, pay for two stay… leaving you more time to explore all there is to love about this city. After all, it’s all about location: in a New York minute, you could be shopping in the Queen Street Mall… or strolling through South Bank Parklands.
But if cocktail hour is calling, the journey is a mere wander downstairs. Right out of a scene from New York’s Mad Men, The Boom Boom Room Izakaya is Brisbane’s ritziest basement bar. Ask the mixologist to whip up a Manhattan and you’ll be basking in Big Apple heaven before you know it.
If you weren’t in a New York state mind before, we hope you’ll be ready to take a bite of the Big Apple right now. With thanks to our friends at Channel 7’s Weekender for this fab holiday inspo. You can catch their show, every Sunday at 1730 (if you’re in Queensland) or via Catch Up TV if you're in Australia.
